About the client
Our client is a leading player in the Belgian retail sector with a strong reputation and a distinct entrepreneurial spirit. In addition to their existing stores, they are currently developing a completely new retail concept in the do-it-yourself and building materials sector.
Specifically, these will be large-scale stores of approximately 8,000 m² per location, featuring an extensive selection of materials, a drive-in area for loading products, and a completely new shopping experience. Not a traditional DIY store, but a comprehensive shopping and experiential environment for both residential and professional customers. The first stores will open later this year, spread across multiple locations in Belgium.
About the job
To successfully bring this concept to market, a completely new purchasing department is being built from the ground up. That’s why we’re looking for a commercially-minded Senior Buyer who wants to help shape this challenge. Given that we’re in the startup phase, there’s also room to explore various product categories, though experience and expertise in retail and categories such as construction, plumbing, or gardening are required.
In this role, you will play a key role in the entire purchasing process. Your responsibilities will include:
- Leading and shaping the purchasing process, including supplier strategy and product assortment development, from the launch of the new retail concept;
- Sourcing and negotiating with suppliers across various DIY and building materials categories, and building strong, long-lasting partnerships;
- Contribute to the purchasing and category strategy and translate market analyses into a commercially distinctive product assortment;
- Take ownership and work closely with sales, marketing, and operations when launching new stores and processes.
The work location is in the Vilvoorde–Antwerp region.
Job requirements
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in economics or engineering;
- Proven experience in purchasing within the retail, DIY, or building materials industries;
- Business-minded, thrives on negotiating and setting up projects from scratch;
- A hands-on, entrepreneurial candidate with drive and a strong sense of responsibility;
- Fluent in Dutch, English, and French;
- Structured, yet flexible, in a rapidly changing startup environment.
